Nexus Ops
Game day was a little mixed up. WO couldn’t play games today and it wasn’t the same without him. We played a new (older release) game called Nexus Ops. BE not only brought the game but some pizza to share. The game went long and we only got one sitting in.
The game play is a mix between a chance dice roll game like risk and a goal driven game. Players are assigned resources each turn to buy units. Battles are fought between players with dice and the loose gets cards that might give them an advantage the next time they do battle. The goal of the game is to complete some random mission cards. A mission card could be to destroy a particular unit type or hold certain board spaces. The game plays well and there is some good strategy to consider.
Heroscape
This week for game day was an informal Heroscape match. BE brought over his EXTENSIVE collection and built 3 maps with some of the new terrain and figures from the new Wave 8 Aquilla’s Alliance set. Personally I’ve only played about 7 games of heroscape and each time it seems to come down to the luck of the roll for a lot of the game advancement. This game I was just plain pathetic. Instead of playing annihilation we played a 5 round game. The person with the most kill points at the end of 5 rounds was the victor. Had I known this before I choose my army the Morrow Hive would not have been my choice of units. MR got stuck in the same boat too and his stragey didn’t work because of the 5 turn game. CC had a good army and some beginners luck on his side. BE had a CrAZy army with like 25 peices of grunt characters. WO made a good fight with his ogre character that got stronger as its life started to dwindle. All in all it was a great evening, funny how pizza can ease a mind blowing defeat!
Arena Maximus – Fantasy Ben Hur
We played a new game called Arena Maximus. Think of the chariot race track in the Roman Coliseum with a magical twist. The game isn’t complicated but there are enough simple choices to make it exciting and the turns to pass fairly quickly once the move order is figured out. I’d recommend each person have a copy of the turn order card, someone at boardgamegeek.com make a nice reference card.
I found myself on the war path with terrible blood lust always doing damage to B.E.’s chariot. Actual, let history remember that I was the only one to actual destroy a chariot, the race track did just about everyone else in at least once!
We played two games and each time it was an all out sprint in the last move to finish first.
