{"id":1780,"date":"2017-07-17T10:04:22","date_gmt":"2017-07-17T14:04:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.insidethe.com\/blog\/?p=1780"},"modified":"2017-07-18T08:51:28","modified_gmt":"2017-07-18T12:51:28","slug":"bookmark-running-exe-over-unc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/insidethe.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/bookmark-running-exe-over-unc\/","title":{"rendered":"Bookmark: Running EXE Over UNC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>https:\/\/social.technet.microsoft.com\/Forums\/windows\/en-US\/70b2dd7e-833c-4240-92e0-9b865e917307\/trusted-sites-and-internet-zone-security-level-gpo-is-not-applying-in-windows-server-2008-r2?forum=winserverGP<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #2a2a2a;\">Apparently, on server2008, despite a domain-wide GPO was applied dictating the trusted sites zone, it seemed to be NOT applied to server2008 !<\/p>\n<p>More specifically, you can see in Internet Options, tab Security, a yellow info line stating that &#8220;Some settings are managed by your system administrator&#8221;, but when checking the list with Trusted sites, this turns out to be empty !<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2a2a2a;\">The exact GPO setting I&#8217;m referring to:<br \/>\nComputer Configuration &gt; Administrative Templates &gt; Windows Components &gt; Internet Explorer &gt; Internet Control Panel &gt; Security Page :<br \/>\n<strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Site to Zone Assignment List<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ENABLED<br \/>\nWith (example):<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/*.myowncompany.com\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 2<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/*.microsoft.com\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a02<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2a2a2a;\">Despite this setting, when checking in IE on any Server2008, the list of sites in Trusted Zone is EMPTY !!<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2a2a2a;\">This is caused by the fact that by default\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration\u00a0 (IE ESC)<\/span>\u00a0is ENABLED for both users and administrators !<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2a2a2a;\">You can disable it for administrators:<br \/>\nStart &gt; Administrative Tools &gt; Server Manager<br \/>\nunder Security Information, click\u00a0<em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\"><strong style=\"font-style: inherit;\">Configure IE ESC<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2a2a2a;\">Under Administrators : click Off.<br \/>\nNow, after closing and reopening IE, you will find the list with Trusted Sites in place !<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">correct<\/span>\u00a0step is this way:\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">User Configuration &gt; Administrative Templates &gt; Windows Components &gt; Internet Explorer &gt; Internet Control Panel &gt; Security Page<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSite to Zone Assignment List\u201d , click \u201cEnable\u201d and edit the list.<\/p>\n<p>Add the site and the number two for Trusted Site. (1 = Intranet, 2 = trusted sites, 3 = Internet Zone and 4 = Restricted Site Zone.<\/p>\n<p>To have a list like that (2 is for trusted site)<\/p>\n<p><i>*.hotmail.com 2<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>*.outlook.com 2<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>*.bing.com 2<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The PRO of that method:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; It standardizes all domain-joined computers as they will use the same list for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; It blocks users from entering new trusted sites. Though this can be a con for small offices or for Power Users wanting more autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>The CON of this method:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; It block user for entering new trusted sites.
